This topic is very close to our heart, as this is important to our customers, to us and our planet.

Drinking coffee is more convenient now more than ever before. With the invention of single-cup coffee pods, millions of coffee drinkers can get caffeinated as quickly and efficiently as possible. And this comes at a cost. Coffee represents a way of getting more work done. It also creates more waste, which is a huge problem for our environment.

K-cups may be small in size, but the waste is adding up pretty fast. Did you know that the amount of K-cups trashed into landfills by 2013 could wrap around the planet more than 10 times? Mind you that was back when the cups were non-reusable, non-recyclable. Keurig since then came up with a recycling plan that addresses sustainability and their environmental responsibility. Their pods will by fully recyclable in Canada by the end of 2018, according to Keurig’s website. They are ahead of their original goal of hitting full recyclability by 2020.

We at Planet Coffee are very excited about our current K-cup Recycling Service for offices. As mentioned in our Recycling Program page, we supply all our customers with recycling bins to collect used single cup packaging at no extra charge. We have almost 100% participation in the Calgary area, thanks to the great support our customers show. Some have asked: “What can you do with coffee?” Well, coffee has more BTU (British Thermal Unit which is a unit of measurement for energy) content per pound than wood, making it ideal for fuel generation. So the used single cup packages are processed locally and converted into thermal or heat energy. We don’t waste anything!
