There is a multitude of gadgets and products for home-based coffee brewing, but pour over coffee at home, if done right, is glorious. And there is nothing flashy about this economical method. Pour over coffee at home starts with freshly ground coffee, a filter, and a filter holder (or ‘pour over dripper’). At the most basic level, pourover brewing involves pouring water over and through the grounds to extract the coffee flavors into your cup. Just knowing and mastering a few more techniques on the pour over brewing system will kick it up a notch!

Did you know that coffee beans can only be collected in the Equatorial zone called “The Bean Belt,” located between around latitudes 28 degrees North and South? This cultivation zone is very similar to wine. If the area around the equator is for coffee, there is “The Wine Belt” on the outside. Therefore, in reality, coffee and wine have very similar taste. You can make a delicious coffee at home and enjoy a variety of flavors like wine!

First and foremost, you need the following items for pour over coffee at home.

  • 30g (3 tbsp) of freshly ground coffee
  • 600g (20 oz) of water
  • Filter
  • Filter holder (or Pour Over Dripper)
  • Drip kettle
  • Scale

Pour Over Coffee at Home Recommended Method

This pour over coffee at home method is recommended by many baristas.

Pour Over Step 1

Bring at least 600 grams (20 oz) of water to a boil.

Pour Over Step 2

Grind 30 grams of coffee (3 tbsp) to a coarseness resembling sea salt. To enjoy the nuanced flavor of a single-origin coffee that is lightly roasted, we recommend less coffee: 23 grams for every 350 grams water.

Pour Over Step 3: Wet the filter

When pouring hot water over the coffee beans, the most delicious flavor is extracted first. So if the drip filter is not wet, it will absorb all the flavor like a sponge. By wetting the filter it can extract all the amazing flavors right into the server.

Pour Over Step 4: 50 grams of hot water and give 30 seconds

First, There will be four pours total for this coffee preparation. This is the first, and the most magical, because it is when you will see the coffee “bloom.” As hot water first hits the grounds, Co2 is released creating a blossoming effect—the grounds will rise up en masse.

Start a timer. Begin pouring water slowly over the coffee, starting at the outer rim and moving in a steady spiral toward the center of the grounds. Stop pouring when the scale reaches 50 grams. Make sure all the grounds are saturated, even if you need to add a little water. The pour should take about 15 seconds. Give the coffee an additional 30 seconds to drip before moving on to the second pour.

Pour Over Step 5: 50 grams of hot water and give another 30 seconds

Be sure to pour all the way out to the edge over the ripples in the filter. This helps to keep grounds from being trapped in there and removed from the rest of the extraction. Add 50 grams, bringing the total to 100 grams. The goal during this pour is to sink all of the grounds on the surface of the bed. This creates a gentle turbulence that “stirs” the coffee, allowing water to more evenly extract the grounds. Allow 30 seconds to elapse.

Pour Over Step 6: 100 grams of hot water and give another 30 seconds

As the mixture of water and coffee from the second pour drops to the bottom of the filter, coming close to the level of the grounds, pour an additional 100 grams of water using the same pattern as the second pour. This brings the total up to 200 grams and should take 30 seconds.

Pour Over Step 7: 200g of hot water

When the water and coffee from the third pour drops to the bottom of the filter, complete your fourth and final pour. Add 200 grams, bringing the total up to 400 grams of water. This pour should take 45-60 seconds.

The pour over at home procedure is now complete. You should have the cooking scale under the server so that the amount of hot water is as accurate as possible. You may find it a bit too much, but exercise patience because the reward is out of the world!
